Jessamyn points out that although New Jersey is facing a shortage of librarians, they are eliminating 50% of their candidates via their PR miscues:
According to Norma Blake, state librarian, "New Jersey is facing a critical shortage in librarians. It’s a great job both for women starting out, and also for women making a mid-life career change.

Our cat has bloody scabs on his chin. We thought that he might just be having one of his masochistic episodes, like when he stared at a light bulb until his eyes watered. We took him to the vet and he said that he probably had an allergy to plastics. So we changed his plastic food bowl to glass, but he still gets them. It could be feline acne, but I don't think so because he doesn't have the black stuff that accompanies it. I think we need a wireless network so he stops chewing on the ethernet cables all the time. Kate says it might also be related to stress and that flower oils are known to help. What could he possibly be stressed about?

Willow was great last night, sucking the life from her friends, to open the portal and save Buffy. And Buffy's choice not to accept more power, because of the "becoming less human" loophole, seems something we can all relate to. How many of my friends have opted for public librarianship, or non-profit work, just so they wouldn't become less human in the corporate world?

Last Saturday night (about 1:45am Sunday morning), Jenny, Barb (Jenny's friend from HS) and I were standing on the platform for the A train at West 4th Street. Then I saw these two guys in costume. They were wearing army/camouflage, carrying rifles and pacing up and down the platform. I wondered why they'd be dressed-up-- maybe protesting the war on Iraq. So I poked Jenny and said "check it out," and Jenny looked solemnly at them. "They had them when I was in Paris," she said. Then I realized they were for real, and so were their giant rifles.
I remembered when I was visiting Santo Domingo on a vacation with my parents, when I was seven or eight years old. They pointed out military men with huge guns on the street and asked if they scared me. They didn't because I had only seen army-men on TV, and GI Joe, and didn't really understand yet what was real. In an uncharacteristically patriotic way they tried to explain why our country was "better," because we didn't need the military mingling with civilians.
Didn't need them! Now we see them in the train stations. And now I'm old enough to be scared.

The anti-war demonstration in Manhattan yesterday reached from 34th street until about 65th street, and took over 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Lexington Avenues!
The people are speaking, and they're doing it peacefully.

This site linked to iPalimpsest! Who are they, though? It's this completely anonymous person-- looks like they might be a librarian, given all their links to librarians and their most recent blog entries. I think most librarians' greatest fans are other librarians, sadly enough. Oh, and those crazy patrons.
Speaking of, I introduced myself to a computer class (bridging the digitial divide one "Master the Mouse" class at a time), and one of the patrons piped up, "I'm in love with her," and then went on to complement my teaching skills. Nice though it was, I still am a little creeped when strangers proclaim their love.

Wrigley Field is suing rooftop owners for copyright infringement. It used to be that people who watched the games from rooftops owned the property, but now it's big business for Wrigleyville. It's an interesting copyright question, as they can't block views of the game, since Wrigley Field is a landmark.

This is a very scary site. Luckilly, I have more faith in girls thinking for themselves than the beef association apparently does.

Miel the little black cat lies next to me, purring and listening to iTunes. I should go make dinner, but how could I abandon him? He's got his little legs pressed up against the side of my belly, ready to start kicking and raising hell if I move away.
So, who saw Buffy on Tuesday night? It just keeps getting better and better this season! First they explain how Giles is not the Big Bad (even though Jenny B was convinced of it and she's rarely wrong with TV plot twists), and then Xander falls for yet another demon girl. Why he didn't just marry Anya, I'll never know. And Willow and that slayer-ette are an official thing-- again, I miss the days of Willow and Tara and Xander and Anya, but I can move on.

Tuesday night's Buffy was amazing! Willow morphing into Warren, as a punishment for kissing someone, and all of the ensuing lovey/kissy scenes put me into quite the Valentine's Day mood. And is Giles off the hook? Seems that way, but who knows? That librarian is so complex.
