I just started a new job at the New York Public Library, working in the Bronx. Today, I noticed that there are chickens living in the yard two buildings down from one of the branches. Chickens! In New York! and not mutant chickens living in the sewers either! Next time I'll bring my camera and post it here. In other news, we will soon be wireless, so if I go to sxsw again, I won't have to be tethered to David Jacobs by a very short ethernet cable, well-chewed on by Mel the cat. There are rumors that the library computer labs will soon be wireless too (at least some of them), so any fears that Kate and I might have harbored about airports causing cancer or burning important things have been dispatched by blatant materialistic desires.

Jenny talking to the cat:
You are staring at the plant-hook on the ceiling. Shadows moving back and forth. Your eyelids are getting very, very heavy. You can't hold them open anymore. You are falling into a deep, deep sleep. Do not pay any attention to the monkey typing on the keyboard next to you. You are very, very sleepy. Don't lick my toe. Don't lick the ethernet cable. I can't hypnotize you. Don't eat the ethernet cord. Stop it. Stop it. Ouch. Ouch.

Moral: Always borrow your movies from the local public library, rather than Blockbuster.
Jenny and I joined Blockbuster a little less than a year ago. At the time we rented "Girlfight" and "American Pie." Then we decided that walking to Blockbuster was too much trouble, especially since we're librarians and can easily borrow and return NYPL materials. Five days ago Jenny received a voice mail message from Blockbuster letting us know that "Flubber" was overdue. "What a pain!" Jenny exclaimed, and I wondered if maybe they'd give us a bunch of free movie rentals when they realized their mistake.
Instead, when I called to straighten things out, I had to explain my story to three people before I was finally given the right person (how many people work in a small neighborhood Blockbuster?) and then wasn't able to convince the guy I wound up talking with, that I hadn't rented "Flubber." Actually, the conversation quickly turned into a screaming fight, and the customer service manager hung up on me.
Not only will I never, ever go into a Blockbuster ever again, but I wish I could turn back time to that fateful day when I patronized them for that one instant.
Always choose your public library over Blockbuster! If you have any questions on how to put holds on library materials at NYPL from home, just email me. I will be glad to assist you with using the library, especially if you promise to avoid Blockbuster will all your heart and soul.

Be wary and wise when you leaf through the hosting company advertisements out there. Otherwise, you might wind up with emails that say, "Our sincerest apologies for losing all your movie reviews when we switched you from Unix hosting to Windows. Oh didn't we mention that's what happened, and that why your FTP login no longer worked and your homepage was replaced by ours?"

Freedom fries instead of French fries? Check www.unitedforpeace.org for anti-war rallies in your neighborhood, and then be sure to give someone a long, very sensual, very French, open-mouthed kiss, at the top of the Statue of Liberty.

According to our March logs, two people searched for "tabby in the tub" and found iPalimpsest.com. I think they were probably looking for this book, and instead they found Zoe!
On Saturday I brought the other cat to the vet to see about his scabby chin and swollen lip. His chin and lips are fine, and are actually just common conditions (chin acne and eosinophilic granuloma complex). Getting him into his carrier, though! I'd pick him up, open the carrier and try to jam him in. He'd freeze and straighten all his limbs, also extending his claws. I'd fail in my attempt to get him in the carrier and then let go of him. We went through this process of capture the cat--> attempt to zip him into the carrier, three or four times. Finally, I was tired and just slung him over my shoulder, the carrier over the other shoulder and went down to the garage.
I tried driving a few blocks with him exploring the car, but when he decided to stand on the neck rest behind my head, I decided we'd never last on the highway. So, I called for backup (my Dad's girlfriend), who suggested wrapping him in a blanket and then stuffing him in the carrier. It worked!

Elektra lives again -- the movie Daredevil may yet redeem itself through a spin-off. Now if they would only hire Frank Miller as their executive producer...

I found this list of ingredients you can use instead of an egg, when you're baking. It seems that this list was originally published on the peta site, but I couldn't find the link.
--3 Tbsp. tofu blended with the liquid in the recipe
--2 Tbsp. cornstarch, potato starch, or arrowroot mixed with 2 Tbsp. water
--1 heaping Tbsp. soy flour + 2 Tbsp. water
--1/2 banana, mashed
--1 Tbsp. flax seeds + 1/2 cup water blended for 1 to 2 minutes or until the mixture is
thick and has the consistency of beaten egg whites
--1/2 cup applesauce
Jenny is about to try the applesauce substitution! If it works, the most wonderful banana muffin recipe in the entire world, will now be vegan!
