I was a cardholder in Cambridge, MA when I lived there as a kid and used it all the time. I have a NYPL card thanks to you guys! I'd get a Brooklyn one but the nearest branch to me is less convenient than just going into Manhattan.

You can use a Brooklyn card at NYPL. Also, you can download eBooks now, if you want to save a trip to Manhattan.

I've had a Hawaii library card since grade school. I used to go during every lunch break when I was working across the street from the main library but now I usually go once a week after work. I make it a point to abstain from purchasing a book until I've borrowed it from the library and read through it completely. If I still want to read it again then I purchase it. I've saved a ton of money that way even with the $5 a year in late fees I usually rack up.

Oh, and another thing. I'm surprised how misinformed people are about libraries. People don't seem to know:

1. You can reserve books online and have it sent to the library nearest you. FREE! No shipping, nothing. Here in Hawaii they send you a postcard in the mail when your book arrives.

2. You can renew a book over the phone with any State library. It doesn't have to be the library you borrowed your book from.

3. You can return your books at any library drop box and it will be considered checked in that same day.
