In 2002 we ran our first marathon, and kept a journal during training. Here it is!
The Official NY Marathon Training Journal (by Jenny)| We thought it would be all sneakers and smiles. But as it turns out, we've got hallucinations, ridiculous foot skuzz and .... read on. Prepare to be disgusted. |
| 4/28/02 | Kate and I have been running 3.5 miles in 31 minutes for the past two days. Today we ran 4.2 miles in 36 minutes. This is the distance we've always run. So far, we've doubled our shopping and alcohol consumption. I have a chafing mark on my chest from where my ribs rub against my new sports bra. Must remember to build muscle, eat more and better, and to think twice before I open my big mouth about signing up for these things. |

| 4/30/02 | Ran 3.5 miles in 29:50 |
| 5/1/02 | Ran 3.5 miles in 30:02. I have a blister on my little toe the size of my little toe. Last night I started sleep walking and speaking gibberish. "There's a big orange in the ceiling-- I can see it with my x-ray vision" and the like. The cats are screaming about the lack of attention. Mercifully, we got the laundry done last night. I even shaved my legs! People won't run and hide at the gym. (I hope) |

| 8/10/02 | Ran 16 miles in a little under 3 hours. Jenny's knee hurts and for the first time, we Hit the Wall and it was the most horrible thing. I was like What the Hell is wrong with my legs and why aren't they moving, and I didn't understand why I could feel so sore-- isn't adrenaline supposed to keep that from happening, at least until the training run is over? I've run in the past, and had my runner's high come and go, and felt a little tired afterwards, but wow! The wall is amazingly horrible. We ran with the New York Road Runner's Club, with the 9:30 pace group. If we learn how to make it through the wall (I hear that eating those little gel-packs helps), we'll be running a 4.5 hour marathon in the fall... |

Jenny claims that I have a co-dependant relationship with the podiatrist. I see her every three weeks now. She'd been treating me for common foot warts, but then they spread to my fingers. At least the fungus seems to be under control. This month we've run a lot, biked a lot, and I got called a "jock" this morning by my boss's boss. I try to be a buff, pretty young thing, and just wind up a jock with foot fungus. After the marathon, I'm getting a bunch of girly clothes, and knee-high leather boots, and wearing make-up. Rebellion against running has begun |
| 9/21/02 | Ran 20 miles in about 3.5 hours on NYRRC's Long Training Run #2. |
| 9/22/02 | Ran about 4 miles to Fairway Supermarket. Ate bagels and scallion cream cheese. Somewhat in pain from yesterday's long run. |
| 10/1/02 | Running, bosu ball, biking, etc. We're still doing this. Tried to make the leap to pretty-young-thing today, and purchased a pair of beige, suede knee-high boots. They're super sexy and I love them. I was carefully putting them away in their bag, next to this picture frame (that should have been hanging on the wall with a picture inside it, but hey-- marathon training turns you into a dirty little monkey that doesn't keep the house clean and repaired), and the boots bag see-sawed. The frame sprang up and hit the bridge of my nose. As I sit here with a gauze pad taped underneath my nerdy glasses, taped to my nose, I think that maybe I should just give up on pretty-young-thing, thing. Perhaps non-geeky fashion and sexyness is something that will forever allude me, the marathon-training librarian. BTW-- Queens Public Library System in NYC just instituted a new dress code to ensure that a hip-trendy librarian will never exist. Blue-haired librarian with a nose-ring, banish yourself! |
| 10/2/02 |
Skipped the gym. Podiatrist appointment. I've grown another wart, this time on the 2nd toe of my right foot. The foot fungus is back, on both feet. Although I didn't have to wear a band-aid on the bridge of my nose, I did have a little red mark. Luckily, I was hidden away in an office in Donnell Library, and didn't have to face the public with my nerdy-ness.
Jenny claims that on our last 20 mile run, she hallucinated that new movie, Ballistic. Why can't good things like that happen to me? She doesn't even have to pay to see it now, and I bet what she created was better than the real thing, anyway. |
| 10/6/02 | Ran 13.1 miles in just under 2 hours, at Grete's Great Gallop, hosted by the New York Road Runner's Club. It was the best race-- we got bagels and goat cheese, and free T-Shirts. Plus, if we could double our half-marathon times, to figure out our marathon times, we'd get a less than 4 hour marathon! But I know-- multiplying your 1/2 marathon pace by 2, just doesn't work. |
| 10/11/02 | Ran 4.5 miles on Thursday. Bosu Ball for an hour on Tuesday. Ran for 10 minutes in the rain this morning, and then ran home to curl up into a small ball of wet girls. Blah. Blah Blah. There are giant Nike ads all over NYC, and especially on the uptown A train track at 59th street, about the NY marathon. One of them claims that bloody nipples are a trophy. Chafing is not pleasant. No one in their right mind should ever think it is. |
| 10/12/02 | Ran 10.5 miles around the Central Park Reservoir. Jenny's knees hurt, and we both got really cranky around mile 7. No more coffee and "strawberry cigars" immediately before running. |
| 10/14/02 | Bosu Ball for Kate. |
| 10/15/02 - 10/20/02 | Can't remember-- probably Bosu Ball, and running and maybe Sculpt or something. |
| 10/20/02 | Walked 5 miles for a Breast Cancer Fundraiser (in Central Park) |
| 10/23/02 | Sculpt Class at Crunch |
| 10/24/02 | Day Off! |
| 10/25/02 | Ran 30 minutes in Inwood Hill Park. |
| 10/26/02 | Ran a little less than an hour in Central Park |
| 10/27/02 | Ran 1 hour and 15 minutes in Inwood Hill Park |

| 11/1/02 | Day Off. |
| 11/2/02 | Ran 20 minutes around Inwood Hill Park. |
| 11/3/02 |
RAN 26.2 MILES IN 4hrs and 31 minutes in the NY Marathon! (Net Time) Look at pictures from the expo, the pasta party and from race day! Our official time is actually 10 minutes slower than our net time, because it took 10 minutes for us to reach the start line, after the race began. Because of lack of port-O-potties at the start (and what wound up turning into an incident involving us and a bunch of other women who didn't want to wait around, who opted for the bushes), we wound up among the last people over the Verrazano Bridge. This meant a lot of weaving around walking people. But all-in-all, it was the perfect day! Wonderful weather, cool people dressed like Spiderman, and wonderful people who gave us PowerGel and water along the way, made it fabulous! Loyal readers, you might ask what's next. Give us a week to recover and decide, and we'll keep you posted. The running journal will continue. |
| 11/25/02 | Due to popular demand, the training journal is back! The marathon may be over, but despite Kate's oath that we would never have to run again, we're still going! Yesterday, we ran 9.2 miles in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. It sounded like an easy run, but was traumatizing because of the huge hills that we had to overcome (the site said "cross-country" and that we would meet at "the flats" - who knew? - and because Kate ran into her high school gym teacher. |
| 12/4/02 | Haven't been to the gym in 4 days! But, check out this picture of us crossing the marathon finish line!![]() |
| 2/11/03 | Okay. we briefly quit running. Actually, quit working out almost totally. The winter funk got us down. Then we noticed the sun setting just a little later at night, and rising just a little earlier in the morning. It's that time again, and we've started running Tues, Wed and Thurs and taking yoga on Mon and Friday-- all before work! |
